With over 30 years of professional experience and higher education, Michael is highly skilled in architecture, graphics, design, and construction management. He holds certifications by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) and the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), and active memberships with the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the Society of American Registered Architects (SARA), and as an International Associate with the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC). With an additional 12 years working in a clinical pathology laboratory, Michael as well is a member in the International Society of Automation (ISA) and the International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE).
A specialist in designing and managing construction of custom residential buildings and renovations, where Michael excels in the art of the human relationship, his projects also include retail and specialty commercial, religious and educational buildings, healthcare and hospitality facilities, financial institutions, and community planning. He is also known for art glass designs, graphics, photography, and more recently, his winemaking.
Michael's architectural "heritage" is unique among Michigan architects and only a few in the world. He is amidst 1,500 worldwide to have apprenticed with the Taliesin Fellowship, the institution founded by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1932 and that only recently ceased operation in mid-2020.
"It was the Taliesin experience that put me on the right path, more or less," states Mr. Hawker. "Taliesin teaches a way of life that embraces all aspects of life, from music to art, cooking to gardening. All of it comprises architecture and the education of an architect."
His unique training was further complemented working for internationally-renown Gunnar Birkerts, FAIA, whose design process continues the European organic tradition pioneered by Alvar Aalto. During his graduate school work, Michael studied under Canadian Gold Medalist, and highly acclaimed organic architect, Douglas Cardinal.
"Those complements added an important part of my education that Taliesin started. Working in Birkerts' office and collaborating with Cardinal offered a special professional practicum and process insights that I would not have experienced otherwise. I learned wholistic design. Those were important years for me in completing my graduate study," added Hawker.
Initially established in St. Louis, Missouri, Michael expanded his licensure from Missouri to Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, and Utah. After a 13-year adventure in Salt Lake City, he relocated to his home state of Michigan to establish a more permanent base. Michael is a licensed architect with considerable hands-on construction experience (rare in this day and age). He has designed projects throughout the United States, and designed a 17,000 s.f. school and convent for Tipitapa, Nicaragua. Other travels have included England, France, Spain, Portugal, Nicaragua, Honduras, Mexico, and Canada. His construction management projects have ranged in dollar values from $10,000 to $600,000 (many built by his own hands) and designs double in scope and value. He has engaged projects for friends, family, corporations, and non-profits.
"A client asked me once if designing a deck is too small a project?" Mr. Hawker replied, "Of course not. If it is a dream of yours and important to you, then it is important to me to realize your dream. The attention to detail and process is the same, only the scale changes."
After earning a degree in Energy Management, Michael became involved with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in response to the world's resource crisis and interest in "green" building. Merely employing recycled or sustainable materials, however, Mr. Hawker recognizes, is not enough to give a building "the spirit."
Thus, Michael is dedicated to organic design principles and educating others – both in his own work and the work of others – kept active by his associations and publishing with the Taliesin Fellows, the Friends of Kebyar, the Amici Dell' Architettura Organica (as North America Correspondent), and the Frank Lloyd Wright House in Ebsworth Park. Michael also is active in the community with other volunteer involvements.
"Giving back is very important," says Hawker.
Earning a second post-graduate degree, this in Mass Communications, Michael formalized his studies in journalism, media arts, graphic design, and electronic publishing – interests that have followed him throughout his life. He has been Editor-in-Chief for a large circulation newspaper, a radio show host, director and producer for professional quality videos, and authored and edited numerous publications. Hawker also enjoys exercising graphic design work for clients, be it a logo or producing a publication.
"Looking back, I realize that my work in publications began at a young age -- from grade school yearbooks to high school newspaperman. I was never really an 'artist' per se in term of painting or illustration, but rather, in commercial art, book design, writing. This parallel to architecture has been with me all my life."
Perhaps following Frank Lloyd Wright and acclaimed St. Louis architect William Bernoudy (also Taliesin trained) footsteps, Michael incorporates art glass designs into his buildings. After inheriting his grandfather's tools and glass in 1992, he learned the craft and began creating. He explores architectural and three-dimensional themes using pure geometries. Michael personally designs and crafts all sorts of items. These pieces are limited and, thus, sought after by his customers. He established Zoetic Arts in 2004 in order to handle those commissions.
To learn more about Zoetic Arts and Mr. Hawker's stained glass designs, please visit Zoetic Arts.
Despite all the experience and involvements, Mr. Hawker would be the first to say that he is "just beginning and always the student." In 2020, his creative spirit expanded a new arena for Zoetic Arts the art and craft of winemaking. Michael established Monte de Romanza, a boutique nano-winery that in three short years has produced some 30 distinct wines. "I'm having a lot of fun. But it is a professional hobby. I spend a lot of time developing the wines we wish to bottle, and carefully guide them every step to finish. Even my labels and presentation is professional and could meet TTB standards."
Perhaps more striking in him than interesting or fun is his passion for creative work, his knowledge of the Organic tradition, and his affable and genuine personality.
"I have studied many organic architects over the years, a passion of mine to learn and observe, including not only Wright and Birkerts, but the life and work of E. Fay Jones, Alden Dow, John Lautner, William Bernoudy, and Nari Gandhi, among others."
Michael maintains a library of collectible and difficult to find resources on notable Organic architects. Many are not well-known, but their work is equally beautiful and worthy of study.
"What I find fascinating is the variety of architectural responses in just those names I mention. All were very different, but all were true Masters in Organic Architecture and did it with 100% devotion. All designed spaces that had the spirit, the principles, and the Idea. Go experience their work for yourself and let me know your feelings."
"Organic Architecture starts with an idea, then it is filtered through various lenses. To put it simply: organic architecture is an architecture of Ideas. It is the Ideal in beauty and harmony in our built environment. The 'L' in 'ideal' stands for 'love.' And when you love the idea, nurture it 100%, only naturally then would honest and pure creativity be the result. Ideas do not necessarily need to be large or expensive, which is why Sarah Susanka's 'Not-So-Big-House' concepts really appeal to me."
-- from interviews with Michael Hawker, 2007 and 2014
Childhood bicycling along Taliesin Drive in Parkwyn Village of Kalamazoo, Michigan, was perhaps an unconscious premonition of Michael’s architectural “heritage.” Formal knowledge of those “different” houses would wait until Washington U. in St. Louis, where he became interested in Wright’s oeuvre. A 1990 Taliesin West tour (spiritedly given by Leslie Nestingen) sparked his idea to attend Taliesin.
After internship with HBE Corporation, the long application to Taliesin culminated in 1994. However, the School was seemingly far from NAAB accreditation, a licensing requirement and Michael exited Taliesin apprenticeship shy of a year, disappointed. Regrouping in St. Louis, he worked and earned a M.S. in Management.
In 1996, he entered Lawrence Technological U’s (LTU) M. Arch program in Michigan, and set sights to work for renowned Organic architect Gunnar Birkerts. Anthony Gholz, a former Taliesin apprentice, hired Michael. Learning Birkerts’ “Organic Synthesis” complemented the Taliesin training, which had left an indelible influence on Michael. At LTU, he also worked with Douglas Cardinal and studied numerous Organic architects.
After graduation, he worked in Sandra Behrens’ small St. Louis design-build company 1998-2003, learning the art of client relationship and construction management. He also was VP of Design for a furniture importer, and assisted children in Nicaragua in the non-profit sector. Michael opened an architecture/construction practice after earning a license to practice and NCARB Certification in 2003. Later, in 2004, Zoetic Arts formed to handle special commissions, chiefly stained glass designs, an interest emanating from his grandfather’s hobby. Zoetic Arts also attracted graphic design commissions.
His dedication to Organic principles and educating others remains active by service to Friends of Kebyar, Amici Dell Architettura Organica and the FLW House in Ebsworth Park. All this has helped integrate a broad view of Organic, including work of Bruce Goff and Giovanni Michelucci. A highlight was authoring a Friends of Kebyar 2007 Journal about Nari Gandhi (former FLW apprentice), the first comprehensive monograph on the Indian architect. Michael has also spoken to groups and written about William Bernoudy, Alden Dow, Fay Jones, and Paolo Soleri. From 2010-2013, Michael served as Editor for the Taliesin Fellows, the alumni organization for the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture, and contributed to their Journal publications.
In 2010, Michael shifted his focus and location to Salt Lake City, Utah. It began a new adventure. From 2012-2015, he advanced his education along two paths. The first was a degree in Energy Management, learning detailed about solar photovoltaic design and installation, sustainable building practices, and systems solutions for energy-efficiency in buildings. It culminated with an internship with the Office of Energy Development for the State of Utah. The second path was in Mass Communication and media arts, focusing on journalism, electronic publishing, graphic communications, website design, and video/audio production. He earned degrees in both Graphic Communications and Mass Communications, along with a Certificate in Mobile Publishing. Supplementing the education, Michael held a position as Editor-in-Chief and Public Relations Specialist for Salt Lake Community College The Globe newspaper and the Mass Communications Center, authoring many articles. Both paths have embellished and expanded his practice of architecture into a far wider world.
From mid-2010 to early 2023, Michael worked a parallel path to architecture while pursuing post-graduate study. He put his own businesses into a part-time status, and shifted it to serve more family, friends, former clients and personal connections on a pro-bono basis "in service." For full-time employ, it was a 180-degree turn working for ARUP Laboratories, a clinical pathology esoteric testing laboratory part of the University of Utah Department of Pathology. He held a technical position in a department so automated, it propelled ARUP by the mid-2000's as North America's most automated laboratory. The new "career" path was never intended to last beyond two years, but two turned to four, four to eight, and so on. In 2022, it was time for change and a full return to architecture. By mid-2023, Michael relocated from Utah to Michigan and reentered full-time architectural practice at the hiring of being the Architect-of-Record for a 50-person office in Kalamazoo that specializes in pharmaceutical and laboratory design. CRB Architects-Engineers PC is part of CRB Group, a 2,000-person, 22-office, coast-to-coast firm with operations also in Europe. In Kalamazoo, their core client is Pfizer Pharmaceutical.
While the Zoetic ventures will remain to serve a select clientele on a limited basis, Michael has set sights on furthering the Romanza brand of wines, and finishing three books written by him. Some day! On a more personal level, Michael embarked on a new and arduous journey: a Body-Mind “feeling” Process toward ego transcendence. It is a process, and there is no true "end." This new influence on his life and architecture remains an unfolding mystery. He also enjoys baking and pastry arts, tennis and bowling, learning to play acoustic guitar, and learning to speak Spanish.
